As immigration was one of the major topics from a recent documentary (Irish Catholics, 1830s) here are some modern day numbers...

  1. This post was originally from Varun's follow-up question from watching the "God in America" video when we started talking about immigration of the Irish Catholics, as Mr. Stewart introduced in the post.

When I was studying for the test last Friday, I found this site to be particularly interesting in follow up to the immigration of Irish Catholics in the 19th century.

Here, it speaks of how half a million Irish moved in the 19th century to America to start new lives. It says that, between 1820 and 1860, one third of the total immigrants to America were Irish Catholics. This number is gigantic. It really put into perspective for me how much of an influence this new group of immigrants had on American society as a whole.

Similar to what was said in our discussion posts on the blog, I feel that this ultimately helped expand the democratic ideal of equality. With Irish Catholics even changing the school system in New York to get out the Protestant influences, America was changed heavily due to the influx of people of a different common religion. While I don't think it was even close to fixing religious discriminations, I think that this large group of immigrants absolutely did help shape the American ideal of religious freedom.
