Amendments

Hey everyone! I know I usually have a hard time keeping all the different amendments straight and some of you might too, so I thought it would be helpful if I made a little list of all the amendments and what they did. (I left out some of the ones that I don't think are that important.)

Amendment
Purpose
1st
Establishes freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of press, freedom of assembly, and the right to petition.
2nd
Protects the right to bear arms.
3rd
Prevents soldiers being stationed in private homes during peacetime without consent from residents.
4th
Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures, sets requirements for search warrants.
5th
Protects the right to due process, rules for indictment.
6th
Protects the right to a fair and speedy trial.
7th
Protects the right to a trial by jury.
8th
Prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.
9th
Establishes that citizens have rights other than the ones that are explicitly outlined in the Constitution.
10th
Establishes that the federal government only has powers that are given to it by the states.
13th
Abolishes slavery and involuntary servitude (except as punishment for a crime).
14th
Defines citizenship and includes the Equal Protection clause (which states that all citizens have equal protection under the laws).
15th
Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on race or ethnicity.
18th
Prohibited the sale and manufacturing of alcohol. (later repealed)
19th
Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on gender.
21st
Repeals the 18th amendment (alcohol is legal again).
22nd
Limits the number of times someone can be elected President (but doesn't actually limit the number of terms someone can serve as president for).
26th
Prohibits the denial of the right to vote based on age (as long as that person is at least 18 years old).
27th
Delays laws about congress members' salaries from taking effect until the next election of representatives. (This one is boring but I like the fact that it took over 202 years to ratify this amendment.)

  2. Thanks for this helpful chart Kristen. I didn't know a lot of the amendments in the 20's, but thanks for the chart!
