  1. I saw a similar article earlier this week using the same numbers from Pew Research. I think that this trend of decreasing religious belief is actually quite noticeable, especially in places like the Bay area. I think a large part of the decline in organized religion comes from the liberal atmosphere that fosters a more "humanistic" lifestyle rather than a holy one. The majority of people in the liberal areas of the United States would agree that a yoga class on Sunday has more value than a religious ceremony on that same Sunday because of the relaxing and controlled nature of yoga with one's body rather than the spiritual impact of a divine entity on one's body that isn't directly noticeable. This opinion was largely looked down upon 30 years ago however and I think that a clear trend can in fact be seen.

  2. I think that a decrease in religious affiliation can be tied in to the increase in the focus of science and idea of the scientific process that something isn't true unless it is proven. This idea belies all that faith is, and spirituality, however as more and more people are brought up with a mindset in this fashion, as well as taught evolution in schools, it must be increasingly hard for them to believe in an all powerful being for which there is no proof in regards to a scientific basis for. It is interesting to speculate that this type education might indirectly correlate to how politics is working today. Of course that's just my opinion, but one can always speculate.
