Operation Unthinkable

Now that we have come to the end of the Cold War, here is something way back from world war two that could have drastically changed how relations could have been between the western powers and the Soviet Union

Operation Unthinkable was the code name for the plan to "Impose the will of the western allies" onto the Soviet Union and to honor the agreements for free and fair elections. This plan was ditched after the odds of its success were deem "fanciful" and instead became the name for a defensive operation against Soviet aggression.

  1. So if we would have gone through with this operation, there is a chance that the Cold War would not have happened? That is very disappointing! Just imagine how the person who cancelled these plans must have felt if he was alive to see what kind of impact his decision would have had on the safety of America. Looking back at history, I'm sure its very easy to find situations like this, which is very upsetting to think about. But at the same time, there are many "thank goodness" in America, where the government took measures against the will of the people, but turned out to really help the United States in the long run!

  2. Wow! I wonder how things would have worked out had they followed through with this. Although to be honest the fact that they ditched the plan for fair and free elections is kind of crazy, seeing as how all throughout WWII and the Cold War the United States advocated for the success and prosperity of democracy world-wide. Interesting how the government directed so much money towards the fight against the spread of communism in the Marshall Plan, Vietnam, the Berlin Airlift, and Cuba, yet this all may have been avoided had they not abandoned their original plan to ensure these elections. Oh well, guess it's too late now!

  3. This is just insane. I really wonder what was going through there minds when they decide to cancel these plans. Just thinking about the Cold War not happening would have saved so much trouble for both sides. There wouldn't be nuclear threats or the space race wouldn't have happened. Now here's one good thing; this helped both nations push their technology to the limit. Overall just thinking about how this would have impact United States today is crazy. Mostly disappointing because it's a huge loss.
