Hillary Clinton

With the next presidential election coming up next year, and many of us approaching the voting age, I wanted to research some of the potential candidates for the 2016 election. The two major candidates for the Democratic Party are Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Because I am more familiar with Hillary Clinton, I decided to research her first. As we all know, Hillary is the wife of Bill Clinton, so she has experience in the White House as First Lady. More recently, she ran as a nominee for the Democratic Party, and gained a lot of support, but ultimately lost to Obama. If she wins next year, she would be the first female president of the US.

In terms of her views:
A champion of human rights
Supports Obamacare-wants to strengthen it
Wants to legalize gay marriage and abortion
May cut middle class taxes
More transparency in the NSA
Does not want to use ground troops against the Islamic State
In terms of Israel, she wants to work towards a two state solution
More leniency on illegal immigration

Well, that's all I have, though I'm sure we'll find out a lot more about her views and the views of other candidates soon. In any case, I think it's important that we all learn about the candidates, should we decide to vote next year.

  1. Thanks for the information Sean! I was curious to see what Hillary's platform was for her presidency and nice to see a condensed version of all of her points. What an exciting time to live in to have the first African American president and a possible first female president elected!

  2. After Hillary announced her candidacy, she has really not done very many interviews or appeared publicly very often. While most candidates are using this as a time to drum up support for their campaign and to test the waters, Clinton appears to be rather silent. Her silence is possibly because of the wave of allegations regarding the corruption of the Clinton Foundation that have been coming out of late.
As for Bernie Sanders, the self proclaimed "Democratic Socialist", there is very little chance that he will be able to become the Democratic nominee, much less the President. His main objective when running is to pull the Hillary and the democratic party further to the left.

  3. Great post Sean! I think it will really be interesting to see how she compares and contrasts her views with Bernie Sanders. In recent years the Republican party's candidates have had the problem that in order to win their primary, they have to be on record saying things that will alienate the rest of the country and therefore dent their chances in the general election. It will be interesting to see if Clinton plants herself as a moderate and lets Sanders take the fringe of the left wing, or if she'll feel that she has to appeal to all liberals, and therefore lose some more moderate and conservative-leaning independents.

  4. Thank you for this concise over view! Political literacy is incredibly important, especially at our ages, but with all of the work we have to do for school it can become very difficult. It should be very interesting to see how Clinton chooses to frame her goals in her formal presidential platform. It often becomes an issue in presidential elections that candidates must water down some of their more drastic ideas in order to win over the majority and actually enact some change, and Clinton is definitely a candidate who's ideas would be highly contested.
